Fundación MAPFRE inaugurates at the KBr Photography Center the temporary exhibition “Lee Friedlander”, curated by Carlos Gollonet. The exhibition presents the figure of Friedlander (New York, 1934), one of the most prolific American photographers of the last century and key personality of the social landscape of the USA.

Influenced by documentary photography by Walker Evans and Robert Frank Friedlander he devised a new way of portraying the American social landscape, often applying an ironic and iconoclastic look in his creations.

This photo exhibition, which can be visited until 8 May, consists of 350 original photographs -the vast majority of them taken with a Leica 35 mm or a Hasselblad Superwide, the author’s favorite cameras- and fifty books covering more than 6 decades of work. Among the author’s favorite themes are street photographs, portraits (and records) of jazz musicians, the juxtaposition of elements in the shadows and reflections of photographs-turning their snapshots into something akin to a collage-and the analysis of chaos within everyday life.

The exhibition, which presents a chronological journey through his extensive work, starts with The Little Screens, a series of photographs in which the author captures screens of televisions that transmit diverse images (faces, objects and important figures of American popular culture) and using unconventional angles.

In The American Monument, another of his best known works, the artist frames important American monuments within the visual and cultural environment that surrounds them (urban or natural landscape).

Food for the eyes.
