Around 350 images encompassing five decades of dedication to the photographic art of the German photographer Michael Schmidt (Berlin, 1945-2014) are exhibited in the exhibition “Michael Schmidt. Photographs 1965-2014”, available at the Museo Reina Sofía until 28 February 2022. This is the first retrospective dedicated to the artist since his death.

The exhibition, curated by also photographer Thomas Weski, addresses the trajectory of the German architect one of the most important photographers of post-war Germany from his initial projects based on the social portrait of youth and female identity, through the representation of the urban landscape of Berlin and the dramas and divisions generated by the Cold War, to reach his last series dedicated to life in the German countryside and the European food industry.

In the exhibition route the visitor will find with snapshots the vast majority in black and white of landscapes, portraits, self-portraits, still lifes and urban views. In addition to the photographs, the exhibition presents other materials, such as models, books and contact sheets by Schmidt.
